Short answer: On St. Pete Beach and the other Pinellas beaches, fall is when patios finally get used. A retractable awning gives you shade over the table. A motorized screen gives you wind and bug control on the open side. Most beach homes do best with both, and we measure in person to get it right.
Fall in Tampa Bay is not like fall up north. The National Weather Service in Ruskin says highs in the mid-80s to lower 90s usually last well into October, and the real cool-down tends to arrive in November. For St. Petersburg, the long-term average date for the first night below 60 degrees is October 30. The average date for the first night below 50 is November 28 (source: NWS Tampa Bay, "When Do We Usually See Cooler Weather?").
That means the sun is still strong at lunch, even when the evenings feel lovely. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26 this year. Snowbirds are back, family is coming, and the patio is the best room in the house. Shade you can roll out at noon and roll back at sunset is what makes that room work.
Salt is the big one. The University of Florida's IFAS Extension says people who live within a couple of miles of salt water often see salt-spray damage, and it advises that plants within about one-eighth of a mile of the coast should be at least somewhat salt tolerant (source: UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions). If salt is hard on plants, it is hard on brackets, tracks and screws too.
The IFAS Coastal Landscapes page also points to wind as a standing issue at the shore (source: UF/IFAS Coastal Landscapes). On a beach lot, a breeze off the Gulf can pick up fast. So the shade you choose has to be built for wind, salt and sun, not just for looks.
Every property is a little different. Here is how we think about it, situation by situation.
A retractable awning over the dining table cuts the noon glare. Pick a light, breathable fabric so the heat does not get trapped. Ask us about a wind sensor so the awning can pull in on its own when a gust comes.
Your lanai already stops bugs. A motorized screen on the open side adds sun control and a bit of privacy. You can also read more about lanai options.
Low sun hits balconies hard in the late afternoon. A slim screen or a compact awning keeps the space cool without eating floor room. Check your association rules first. Our post on small balcony and loft shade walks through the choices.
If guests use the patio, simple controls matter. A remote or wall switch is easy for anyone. Strong hardware matters too, because nobody is home to rinse off the salt every week.
An awning is best for shade over a table or a seating spot. A screen is best when the sun, wind or bugs come in from the side. Our guide on fixed vs. retractable awnings explains why most beach owners prefer the kind that rolls away.
Think about when you use the space. If it is morning coffee, you need east shade. If it is dinner, you need west shade. If it is both, you may want an awning and a screen working together.

Salt is hard on any outdoor product, so care counts. Coastal-grade finishes and regular fresh-water rinses help a lot. We can walk you through the care steps at your estimate.
Awnings are made for shade, not for strong wind. Pull it in when gusts pick up. A wind sensor can do this for you. Ask us what fits your patio.
It depends on your city and your building. Condos and HOAs often have their own rules too. Check with your city building department and your association before work begins, and we will help with the details we can.
